Objective
On completion of the course, the student
• recognises when feedback control is required and is able to understand the significance and difference between actuators
• is able to dimension actuators based on both static and dynamic loads
• is able to use mathematical methods to tune and select the components of various systems.
Content
• Regulators and their function
• Comparison of open and closed control loops
• Using simulation for control development
• Frequency analysis
• Dynamic properties of actuators
• Commissioning a closed loop system
Evaluation scale
0-5
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student
• knows the difference between open and closed loop control
• recognises the difference in the dimensioning of static and dynamic systems
• is able to apply simulation to analyse a simple system.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student
• knows the difference between open and closed loop control
• is able to dimension a dynamic system and recognises the significance of dynamics when choosing components
• is able to apply simulation to analyse a simple system.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student
• knows the difference between open and closed loop control and is able to choose a suitable control system for an application
