Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in everyday life communication in familiar situations and their language proficiency will be sufficient to take care of simple practical things. The student is able to understand the main points in short, ordinary texts and also conclude details from the context. The student is able to write short messages and describe their personal history and leisure time in a simple manner. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

• Oral and written communication in everyday contexts: leisure, travel, hobbies, health, nature, shopping situations, basic information about Finnish culture and society
• Grammatical structures, past and nominal forms of verbs, verb rections, use of object, expressing necessity, new types of words
• Features of spoken Finnish

Further information

This elective course is meant for IT students. It is highly recommended for non-EU/EEA students who apply for Metropolia scholarship for the annual tuition fee.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to
• answer questions in a simple conversation
• write short and simple texts concerning everyday life
• understand the main points and some details in ordinary texts
• recognise the most important features of colloquial Finnish.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
• communicate understandably in a simple conversation
• apply simple and familiar structures and vocabulary
• further a conversation to some extent, for example by asking questions and commenting on the subject
• understand texts concerning everyday life
• compose understandable texts on familiar topics
• understand basic features of colloquial Finnish.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
• participate in simple conversations concerning familiar everyday topics both as a listener and as a speaker
• further the conversation by asking questions and commenting on the subject
• understand short texts concerning everyday life even when the topic is not related to their immediate environment
• apply the structures they have learnt to new words and expressions
• use basic colloquial Finnish to some extent.

Qualifications

Previous knowledge of Finnish on the A1.3 level, for example the courses Finnish 1 (5 credits) and Finnish 2 (5 credits).
