Objective

The students will be able to recognise their knowledge, skills and attitudes as a writer. They will understand the situational variation of language, and will be able to recognise and utilise different text types accordingly. Students will deepen their skills of language revision and editing, and will be able to analyse special features of written communication in health care and social services and academic writing. Students will be able to produce structured and clear professional texts.

Content

Constructing one’s identity as a writer. Getting acquainted with the principles of register in different genres. Revising and editing. Special features of written communication in health care and social services. Academic writing.

Qualifications

Vähintään suomen kielen taitotaso B1.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass:
The students’ vocabulary and grammar are sufficient for writing comprehensible and relatively flawless texts.
The students are familiar with the linguistic means for writing a clear and coherent text.
The students master the differences between formal and informal style.
The students identify the requirements and principles of register in different genres and take them into account in their texts.
The students are able to compose and understand texts in their field.
The students can independently read fairly long texts on field-related topics.
The students are able to compose texts required in their own field, and communicate information and their own views fluently.
The students are able to assess and develop their language skills independently.
The students are able to receive feedback and apply it in their writing.

Fail:
The students’ language errors in their texts significantly affect the comprehensibility of the text.
The students are not able to compose a clear and coherent text, and the texts are list-like and disconnected.
The students are not able to recognise the differences between formal and informal styles, or to take into account the requirements of formality in their writing.
The students are not able to produce texts in their field or to understand professional texts in their field.
The students are not able to express themselves or their views in Finnish intelligibly.
