Tavoitteet

In this course, the participants will be given opportunities to experience some aspects of Japanese culture in the modern era, through watching animated movies. For this purpose, selected movies namely The Wind Rises(2013), Your Name(2016) and In this Corner of The World(2019) will be shown in the class sessions.

The focus will be on a selected animated movie, The Wind Rises (2013), a masterpiece by Hayao Miyazaki as participants’ course project is based on the movie. In the class, the participants will be asked to form groups consist of 3 or 4 members chosen randomly, and work collaboratively toward a presentation on the last day. Any topic for the group project may be accepted as long as it is derived from the content of the movie. Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to acquire new knowledge of Japanese culture described in the story between the 1920s to 1940s. Also, the participants will have an opportunity to meet new people with a diversity of cultures and work together online.

-Historical and cultural background in the story between the 1920s to 1940s
-Wars and development of technology
-Male and Female relations described in the story
-Japanese customs described in the movie, such as greetings, dietary life and
marriage practices
-Western literature, paintings and musical works found in the movie
