Objective
On completion of the course the student
- knows the abbreviations, symbols and line types used in structural drawings
- knows the most common abbreviations, symbols and line types used in other types of drawings related to construction
- can draw a section from a given plan drawing using BIM application
- can make reinforcement drawings using BIM application
- can explain the reinforcement of a structure from a drawing
- can understand the division of loads in the structure and explain structural models for hand and computer calculations
- can determine the permanent loads and live loads of an ordinary building
- can determine the snow load and the wind load acting on a building
- can compose the ULS load combinations for a structure.
- can compose the load combinations of a structure for SLS design
- can find information related to loads and ways of composing structural design documents
- understands the status of the work description as a design document
- can explain the contents of a work description
- knows the principles of the eurocode design method
- can consider the requirements of Finnish National Annex as complementary information to Eurocodes
- can find supplementary information about Eurocode related standards
- is familiar with the execution standards at the extent required for structural engineering.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student can:
- explain the reinforcement of a structure from a drawing
- produce a reinforcement drawing of a beam and slab using BIM application
- explain the most common symbols used in structural design
- explain the meaning of different line types in drawings
- draw a model for a structure type using BIM application
- calculate the dead weight of a structure, live loads, snow and wind loads based on simplified assumptions lying on the safe side
- draw a simple structural model; understand its loading and the division of the loads on different model members
- find relevant information from Eurocodes, National annexes and execution standards.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
In addition to the previous criteria, the student
- can explain the reinforcement of a structure from a drawing
- can draw the reinforcement of a structure based on a description using BIM application
- knows the symbols, abbreviations and line types used in structural drawings and can recognise the most common symbols used in HVAC design
- understands the significance of consequence class in ULS design
- produces structural models for structural design without problems and can explain the relevant loads and the division of loads on different model members
- understands critical loading situations of a structure
- can calculate the dead weight of a structure, as well as live loads, snow and wind loads.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
- draw a section of a complex building using BIM application
- determine the snow load of a complex building
- determine the wind load of a high building
- differentiate between the total wind load and wind load on surfaces
- explain the division of loads on structural members
- determine dimensioning loading situation of a member.
