Objective

On completion of the course the student will learn principles of most common unit operations of separation processes. The student will be able to calculate main dimensions of chosen equipment. The students will get familiar with VLE and LLE diagrams.

Content

1. Mass transfer processes
2. Separation operations
3. Modelling of chemical processes
4. Use of process simulator

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to describe and explain the basic phenomena and related concepts of unit operations of mass transfer. The student is able to calculate and size mass transfer processes on the basis of the given equations. The student understands the basis for the liquid-vapor equilibrium of binary mixtures. The student is able to use a process simulator.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to describe and explain the basic phenomena and related concepts of unit operations of mass transfer. The student is able to calculate, size and select mass transfer processes on the basis of the given assumptions. The student understands the basis for the vapour-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibrium of binary mixtures. The student is able to use a process simulator in calculating mass transfer processes.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to model, size and select mass transfer processes based on meaningful assumptions and to analyze, evaluate and modify solutions and models as needed. The student understands the liquid-vapor and liquid-liquid equilibrium of binary and multi-component mixtures and where they are based on. The student is able to use a process simulator smoothly in calculating mass transfer processes.
