Objective

On completion of the course the student is familiar with control mechanisms at different stages of a construction project.
The student can analyse built environment and is able to use relevant information sources to get information about construction.
The student can observe inside and outside stresses on a structure caused by weather conditions and different activities.
The student knows the principles and possibilities related to building information modelling (BIM) and knows which drawings and documents are needed in a construction project.
The student can take measurements in different coordinate and height systems and perform related geodetic calculations.

Content

1. Processes and tools for guiding land use and construction
2. Sources of information in the field of construction
3. Building types and building components.
4. Basics of BIM, work specifications, drawings and legends
5. Thermal, water, fire and acoustic insulation
6. The building envelope, the roof, and water drainage from the surroundings
7. Principles of accessibility and practices of achieving it
8. Coordinate and altitude systems
9. Measuring differences in distance and altitude
10.Geodetic calculations in construction measurements

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
- can give examples of land use and construction guidance
- can list information sources in the field of construction
- can produce a building information model with construction drawings for a simple single-family house with guidance
- can give examples of thermal, water, fire and acoustic insulation and water drainage
- can differentiate between building types and recognise building components
- can give examples of accessible construction solutions.
The assignments have been completed and handed in in a satisfactory manner.
The student's participation during lectures is satisfactory.
- explain the coordinate and altitude systems, the principles of taking measurements, can use levelling instruments within a given time limit and accuracy tolerance limit, and can perform basic calculations in a geodetic coordinate system

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
- can explain and interpret processes and tools for guiding land use and construction
- can use information sources in the field of construction independently
- can produce a building information model with construction drawings for a simple single-family house and explain the importance of a work specification
- can explain different insulation needs related to the building
- can explain the characteristics of the built environment and buildings.
The assignments have been completed and handed in a satisfactory manner.
The student participates actively in lectures.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
- can analyse and compare different information sources
- can make use of BIM in creating relevant information
- can connect information in BIM, construction drawings and work specifications in different phases of the construction project.
The assignments show independent thinking.
The student's participation during lectures shows a genuine interest in the subject and the student takes initiative in developing expertise in the field.
