Objective
Students
- are familiar with the research process and the principles of development work based on research
- are familiar with information seeking and analysis methods applicable to development work as well as other work methods
- understand the justification for methods and instruments used in development work
- evaluate critically Finnish and English research conducted by different methods
- understand the significance of concise research knowledge to the development and implementation of common practices
- adhere to the ethical principles of research and development work
- communicate in English in diverse operating and development environments.

Research process and development work based on research
Information seeking and critical reading
Qualitative and quantitative information seeking and analysis methods and their application to research and development work
Practice-based approach to development work
Concise research knowledge (e.g. recommendations) and its use in evidence-based practices
Ethical principles of research and development work
Central concepts and terminology of one’s own field in English

Further information
The courses: Learning Skills in Nursing and Health Care (5 ECTS) as well as the Becoming a Health Care Professional (5 ECTS) are done and accepted before this course.
It is obligatory for every student to attend the first classes of the course, as working in groups starts then.
Components of the course are as follows:
• Methods for Research and Development Work: interactive lectures and an exam
• Professional English: Learning assignments and an exam
• Statistics Workshop: Learning assignment

Assessment methods and criteria
Each component of the course (please, see the components of the course above) must be accepted as completed, and they are all part of the final grade of the course:
• There are two separate exams in the course: Firstly, an exam in methods for research and development work, and secondly, an exam in professional English. The evaluation scale for both exams is 1-5.
The final grade is based on the weighted mean of the written exams.
Further information
A separate framework for evaluation is used. The evaluation of the study unit emphasizes knowledge base and ethical approach as well as cooperation in particular.
