Objective

Students will work as experts of elderly care on multi-professional teams of mental health and alcohol and drug intervention. They will be able to recognise special concerns and needs of the elderly and their significant others related to these issues. Students will be prepared to encounter old persons who have various disabilities, substance abuse and mental health problems, and be able to support their good ageing and social participation. Students will identify the special needs of the elderly who are disabled, intoxicated and have mental health problems and support their coping in everyday life and, when necessary, refer them for further treatment.

Content

Special needs and issues related to mental health and alcohol and drug intervention of the elderly. Old people’s mental health problems and their treatment, e.g. depression. The effect of substance abuse on elderly people’s health, welfare and functional capacity. Encountering elderly substance abusers, discussing problems related to drug and alcohol usage and referring clients to appropriate rehabilitation. Mental health and alcohol and drugs intervention legislation and offered services. Rights and status of an elderly disabled person. Elderly clients with sensory, mobility and mental handicaps. Disability services and legislation. Most common methods and aids for communication support

Assessment methods and criteria

Learning assignments; continuous assessment (active participation in contact teaching); 100%. See evaluation criteria (+learning assignment guidelines). A failed learning assignment must be complemented within one month. An approved assignment cannot be complemented.
