Objective

Students will display their high gerontological competence in multi-professional working environments for the care and nursing of the elderly. They will be able to identify persons with memory disorder and the starting points for assisting them and their loved ones through rehabilitative care. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the principal nursing methods for treating geriatric diseases and will prepare nursing and rehabilitation plans according to quality assurance guidelines. They will understand the significance of hope and spirituality in care and nursing. Students will also apply their ergonomics skills in their work.
Students will know the ethical principles of elderly care and be able to apply and evaluate the significance of ethical questions and principles in the promotion of good ageing.

Content

Project work. Principal methods and principles of care and nursing. Rehabilitative nursing. Classifications of elderly care and drawing up care and service plans. Ergonomic working. Hope and spirituality in care and nursing. Core concepts of terminal care. Crisis theory and the phases of grief. Professional ethics of elderly care. Ethical action and professionalism in Elderly Care. Laboratory work.
Work placementi in an around-the-clock caregiving and nursing unit such as a group home for memory-loss patients. (7 credits) Self-evaluation of the development of competence and professionalism.
