Objective
Professional Swedish for Fashion and Clothing 3 cr:
After the course, the students have achieved:
• the oral and written language skills of a second domestic language (Swedish or Finnish as a second language) required by the UAS law (1129/2014, § 7), which is required for work in their field.
• the ability to communicate verbally and in writing in the contexts of their own professional field, as well as in a multidisciplinary work community. The students can take into account different operators when working in Swedish both in Finland and in the Nordic countries, OR in Finnish as a second language (S2) in Finland, while considering the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the parties involved in the communication situation. The students’ verbal and written communication skills (Swedish or Finnish as a second language) are on level B1 or higher as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
• the ability to seek information related to their own professional field from various sources and convey information both orally and in writing. During the studies, the students will have formed a positive and realistic view of their language and communicative competence as well as skills and motivation to develop the competence further.
Research Communication 2 cr:
After completing the course, the students are able to:
• search and evaluate information critically and use it purposefully.
• define good practices in oral and written communication and apply them appropriately.
• define the general characteristics and practices of scientific texts.
• use source materials proficiently.
• write and edit texts at different stages of their thesis.
• influence the comprehensibility of the text.
• apply the acquired skills both to the thesis and to workplace communication.
• write a thesis for a university of applied sciences.
Content
Professional Swedish for Fashion and Clothing 3 cr:
Key international and domestic interactions in the clothing sector: individual and group communication. Practicing different negotiation and work situations. Presentation of collections, preparation of business letters and drafting different contracts in Swedish. Key concepts and terms in the profession. Clothing organizations, work environments, tasks, processes and tools. Self-assessment of language and communication skills and development of learning strategies.
Research Communication 2 cr:
Fundamentals of scientific writing. Familiarization with the research and communication in the field of fashion and clothing. Ethical and critical use of sources and references. Presentation skills, influencing through speaking and giving feedback. Understanding, interpreting and applying reading materials, and practicing versatile writing. Achieving the aptitude to write a thesis for a university of applied sciences.

Skills corresponding to the level B1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Research Communication 2 cr:
Skills corresponding to the level B2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Professional Swedish for Fashion and Clothing 3 cr:
The student can communicate in their most typical general and field-specific professional situations in working life. The student can write simple texts with a reasonable amount of consistency. There may be errors, but the message comes across nevertheless. The student takes part in simple interaction, but often needs help from other speakers. The student is comfortable with everyday vocabulary and the vocabulary of their own field, but inaccuracies and the influence of other languages may make it difficult to get the message across. The student uses the commonest basic structures in a one-sided way and sometimes incorrectly. The student can pronounce understandably but not like a native, and the slowness makes it difficult to assess how well the message may get across.
Research Communication 2 cr:
The student is able, under guidance, to use and produce oral and written text types required for professional expert work. The student is able to acquire information from professional sources and to utilise such information in their studies and work. The student is able to act appropriately in communication situations related to expert work and research and development work.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Professional Swedish for Fashion and Clothing 3 cr:
The student can communicate reasonably well in their daily general and field-specific professional situations in working life. The student is able to write a text with coherent content, getting the message across, and is proactive in interaction in common situations in the field. The student is reasonably fluent in basic vocabulary of their field and general language. Word choices may sometimes be inaccurate and the sentence structures imperfect, butthese do not interfere with the communication. The student pronounces understandably, and pauses in the flow of speech do not prevent the message from getting across.
Research Communication 2 cr:
The student is independently able to use and produce oral and written text types required for professional expert work. The student is able to acquire information comprehensively from professional sources and to evaluate its reliability and usability in their studies and work. The student is able to act constructively in communication situations related to expert work and research and development work.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Professional Swedish for Fashion and Clothing 3 cr:
The student can communicate in versatile and demanding general and field-specific professional situations in working life. The student can write clear and detailed text in a way that is suitable and accurate for the situation. The student takes an active part in interaction in a way that is appropriate in professional situations. The student speaks fluently and effortlessly and takes into account the other speakers. The student uses general vocabulary and the vocabulary in their own field in a versatile way, making very few grammatical errors. The student pronounces clearly and the speech sounds natural.
Research Communication 2 cr:
The student is able, in a target-oriented way, to use and produce oral and written text types required for professional expert work. The student is able to acquire information comprehensively from professional sources and to evaluate its reliability and usability in their studies and work in a critical way. The student is able to act as a group member or head of a group in communication situations related to expert work and research and development work. The student displays a willingness to develop their communication and interaction skills required of experts.
