Objective
The student can define the significance of mixing in the music production process. The student is able to accomplish technically and artistically balanced mixes for different musical genres and purposes, and to utilize the possibilities provided by computer-based studio technology. The student is able to use digital signal processing technology in mixing and editing. The student is able to prepare their own production for mixing.
Content
Studio work, mixing and editing assignments, peer feedback. Lectures, guest lectures and visits. Mixing as technical and creative work. The work and role of the mixing engineer in music production. The role of the producer in the mixing stage.
Qualifications
The student can define the significance of recording techniques in successful sound production and can recognize the characteristics of different microphone types. The student can describe different features, functions and placements of microphones in recording situations. The student is able to plan and implement a recording session in a professional sound studio and is able to collaborate with musicians in a recording situation. The student is able to listen both critically and analytically. The student can define the role of the producer in different music productions. The student can outline the various tasks of a producer and the responsibilities and requirements that are associated with them. The student identifies the technical and artistic characteristics of music productions in different eras, understands the historical development of music technology and production, and is able to contextualize these in relation to modern practices. The student can implement a basic music production.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
- The student is able to follow agreed schedules and submit their assignments on time.
- The student can work as an active member of the group and give constructive feedback on the contributions of the other group members.
- The student presents and argues their own contribution to the group as agreed and is able to receive feedback and reflect on their own performance.
