Documentary Film ProjectLaajuus (15 ECTS)

Objective

The student has a theoretical understanding of documentary film expression and can contribute to a finished production in his/her professional role.

Screenwriting:
The student knows different documentary structures and and understands their respective narrative characteristics. The student can analyse documentary dramaturgy and levels separately in relation to image and sound. He can write a script for documentary. He can evaluate the relation of script to the final work.

Production management:
The student can break script down to budget, production plan an production time schedule. The student can develop a production plan of directing, shooting, editing and sound recording in relation to both content and technique. The student can communicate with the production team about the state of and changes in the production. The student knows the laws related to intellectual property rights and the intellectual property holders in a documentary production and can take into account the aspects related to the use of works of third party intellectual property holders in the production. The student can make contracts with the performers and get shooting permissions. The student knows the meaning to teamwork in documentary production and can work in different professional roles in the production. The student can manage the workflow of a documentary production. The student is acquainted with short film distribution prospects and can apply his/her knowledge in practice. The student can do reporting of finished production in school context.

Cinematography, editing and sound:

The student has basic level content and technique related skills in documentary film cinematography, lighting, sound work, editing and post-production. The student can use light sound recording, camera and lighting equipment in documentary production. The student knows expressive principles of image, sound and editing and can apply them in practice. The student can edit a documentary film in respect to both content and technique. The student knows the practices of documentary sound recording and sound post-production and can apply his/her knowledge in a documentary film production.
