General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

The student knows and recognizes biomolecules, their functional groups and their ability to bond and form linkages. He/she understands how organic biomolecules form compounds and their features. He/she is able to recognize eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and their features. The student knows how eukaryotic cell organelles function. He/she is familiar with genome structure, definition of the gene and gene regulation.

Content

1. Structures, features and functions of biomolecules (lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins). Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structures.
2. Different genome structures, genes (concepts and terms). Cell cycle, DNA replication and mutations.

Qualifications

None

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student recognizes biomolecules and is familiar with their distinct features.
2.The student understands the structure of the genome and gene concept. He/she understands what replication means and the stages of the cell cycle.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student understands how macromolecules are build up.
2. The student understands the basics of gene regulation and can name the common DNA mutations types. He/she can describe the DNA replication process in general.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student understands derivates of different biomolecules. He/she understands the role the variety of biomolecules play in a functional cell.
2. The student can describe how a typical bacterial operon functions. He/she can describe and name the most crucial factors of DNA replication. He/she can describe the cell cycle check points.
