Course unit code: SE00AA13

General information

Credits
6 ECTS

Objective

After completing the study unit, students
• master requesting for instructions for treatment as well as providing initial diagnostic information.
• manage the implementation of advanced pre-hospital emergency care of the most common patient groups independently.
• master controlling the airway manually, with supraglottic devices and by intubation.
• identify different types of arrhythmia and ischemic changes from the ECG.
• are proficient in the use of authorities network as well as the most common data terminal equipment.

Content

Interpretation of arrhythmia and ischemia with ECG
Securing airway with intubation
Use of monitor/defibrillation (cardioversion, pacing)
Implementation of CPAP treatment
Advanced pre-hospital emergency care of the most common patient groups
Advanced medication in emergency care
Patient care protocols in emergency care
Basics of leadership of day-to-day situations in emergency care

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students know how to treat the most common patient groups by following written instructions. Students know the most common medicines used in emergency care and their indications for use. Students can open and maintain airway manually and with supraglottic devices as well as are familiar with the technique of intubation. Students can follow the resuscitation algorithm in the most common cases. Students know the principles of ECG interpretation concerning arrhythmia and ischemia and know how to describe the rhythm and ischemic changes verbally. Students are competent to use the basic level pre-hospital emergency care treatment and support equipment and are familiar with the use of equipment at advanced level. Students manage the day-to-day communication with authorities. Students are aware of the responsibilities of advanced-level paramedics in leading day-to-day activities.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students can implement the treatment of the most common patient groups by following written instructions. Students know the most common medicines used in emergency care, their indications for use and are able to describe their main side-effects. Students can open and maintain airway manually and with supraglottic devices as well as manage the technique of intubation. Students can follow the resuscitation algorithm. Students can interpret the most typical arrhythmia as well as clinically evident ischemia and STEMI from the ECG. Students master the use of basic level pre-hospital emergency care treatment and support equipment and can use the equipment at advanced level. Students manage the day-to-day communication with authorities and know the principles of communication in more demanding situations. Students manage the leadership of day-to-day situations in emergency care.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students can implement the treatment of the most common patient groups by following written instructions and know how to apply their skills to situations when deviations from the original treatment plan are necessary. Students master the most common medicines used in emergency care and their indications for use as well as know the indications for use of the less typical medicines. Students can open and maintain airway manually, with supraglottic devices and by intubation. Students can follow the resuscitation algorithm and apply their knowledge on algorithm to abnormal situations. Students can interpret the ECG in acute situations and know how to apply their knowledge to the interpretation of more complicated cases. Students master the use of treatment and support equipment in pre-hospital emergency care. Students master communication with authorities in day-to-day situations and in cases of multiple traumas. Students manage the leadership of day-to-day situations in emergency care and can apply their knowledge to abnormal situations.
