Objective

After completing the study unit, students can evaluate the health needs and challenges of adults and the elderly. They are able to implement screenings and health examinations aimed at adults and the elderly. Students use flexibly and individually health promotion methods to prevent lifestyle diseases at individual, group and community level in their work. They apply evidence-based knowledge to the planning, implementation and evaluation of client-oriented health promotion.

Content

Clinical practice at health centres: adult counselling/outpatient care
Applying the work methods of health promotion
Prevention and promotion of diseases typical of Finland
Health examinations, screenings and client education at clinics
Current Care Guidelines for the major lifestyle diseases
Individual and group education:
to support lifestyle changes: weight control (nutrition), intoxicants (alcohol, drugs, smoking), health exercise
to support mental health
to promote functional capacity
to promote sexual health
planning, implementation and evaluation of individual education promoting health

Student is able to
evaluate the health needs and challenges of adults and the elderly.
implement screenings and health examinations of adults and the elderly under supervision.
use health promotion methods to prevent lifestyle diseases at individual, group and community level.
use evidence-based knowledge to planning, implementation and evaluation of health promotion.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student is able to
evaluate the health needs and challenges of adults and the elderly.
implement screenings and health examinations of adults and the elderly quite independently and in a client-oriented way.
use health promotion methods to prevent lifestyle diseases at individual, group and community level appropriately.
apply evidence-based knowledge to planning, implementation and evaluation of client-oriented health promotion.

Student is able to
evaluate the health needs and challenges of adults and the elderly in challenging situations.
implement screenings and health examinations of adults and the elderly independently and in a client-oriented way.
use health promotion methods to prevent lifestyle diseases individually and in a client-oriented way at individual, group and community level.
apply evidence-based knowledge to planning, implementation and evaluation of client-oriented health promotion.
