Objective

Students apply the principles of the Baby Friendly Initiative Programme to the care of the newborn baby. They master the basic care and needs assessment. Students are able to provide education to parents on the care of the baby and early interaction. They identify special features and signs of those newborns requiring special observation and know how to act accordingly. Students display basic competence to care for a newborn requiring special observation. They are capable of acting in unexpected situations and have competence to initiate resuscitation of a newborn and act as a team member in these situations.

Content

Observation of a newborn baby
Basic care of a newborn: bathing, skin care, umbilical cord (stump) care, dressing and swaddling, lifting up and carrying
Care of the newborn after a caesarean section
Symptoms of a newborn, identifying needs for special observation
Methods of special observation
Newborns requiring special observation: premature babies, babies of diabetic mothers, babies of substance-abusing mothers etc.
Unwell newborns, resuscitation of a newborn baby

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students can describe the principles the Baby Friendly Initiative Programme to the care of the newborn baby.
Students can describe the basic care and needs assessment of a newborn baby.
Students are able to describe the education of parents on the care of the baby and early interaction.
Students can describe special features and signs of those newborns requiring special observation and nursing procedures.
Students describe central observation and care methods of newborns requiring special observation.
Students describe the signs of an unwell newborn requiring immediate care. Students can assume the role of a nurse in a resuscitation of a newborn in classroom simulation in accordance with the Current Care Guidelines.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students can describe individually the principles the Baby Friendly Initiative Programme to the care of the newborn baby.
Students can describe the basic care and needs assessment of a newborn baby and apply them individually.
Students are able to describe the education of parents on the care of the baby and early interaction.
Students can describe and give examples of the special features and symptoms of those newborns requiring special observation as well as the nursing procedures taken.
Students describe and give examples of the observation and care methods of newborns requiring special observation.
Students apply the needs assessment of care citing case examples.
Students’ actions are proficient in the role of a nurse in a resuscitation of a newborn in classroom simulation and in accordance with the Current Care Guidelines.

Students master the basic care and needs assessment of a newborn baby.
Students are able to provide education to parents on the care of the baby and early interaction.
Students can describe and evaluate the special features and symptoms of the newborns requiring special observation by citing case examples and justify the nursing procedures required in a versatile way.
Students describe central observation and care methods of the newborns requiring special observation and cite various case examples in a justified way.
Students’ actions are proficient in the role of a nurse in a resuscitation of a newborn in classroom simulation and in accordance with the Current Care Guidelines, and they are able to contribute to the group interaction of the care team.
