Objective

The objective of this course is to provide all students with a sufficient and solid basic knowledge of mathematics and mathematical statistics, necessary for the studies of chemistry and physics. The student’s mathematical skills will show in his/her ability to understand and use mathematics in the applications encountered in the laboratory field as well as in the clarity and precision of presentation. Practice will develop the skills needed to use calculation and deduction skills as well as instruments and different sources of information. Confidence in his/her mathematical skills and the ability to work on a long-term basis will enable the student to work independently and to develop his/her own work.

Content

Revision of the basics of algebra, quantity calculation, percentage calculation, precision of results. Exponential and logarithmic functions. Graphic presentation. Basics of differential and integral calculus. Determinants and the basics of matrix calculus. Using statistics (basic concepts, measurements, sampling methods), presentation of experimental data, parameters, statistical dependence (correlation, regression), probability distributions, the basics of estimation.
