Dimensioning of Structures and Geotechnical Calculations in Road ProjectsLaajuus (5 cr)

Course unit code: TX00FW09

General information

Credits
5 cr

Objective

At the end of the course, the student knows the dimensioning of the superstructure of the roads. He knows the differences between different dimensioning procedures for roads and streets. The student knows how to choose the right field research methods for the geotechnical and structural planning and how to interpret and make the necessary geotechnical inspections in a road/highway project. The student knows structural solutions and materials, which supports the green transition.

Content

- different survey methods for the roads / streets
- dimensioning and designing of the superstructure of traffic lanes (frost, bearing capacity)
- consideration of foundation structures and geotechnics in road planning
- interpreting geotechnical calculations
- the possibilities of using geosynthetic products and other base reinforcements in the road superstructure
- special features of railway projects

Qualifications

Foundations and substructures
Infrastructure base structures
Earthworks

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows the basics of the most important aspects of the course on the design of the structure of a road, such as the classification of different lanes, the meaning and contents of the superstructure, and the basics of dimensioning.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows the basics well and can flexibly apply them to the practice of road design.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Admirably knows the basic principles of the course and very well knows how to apply the results of dimensioning in practice and knows the effects of different materials in the superstructure of roads.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student knows the basics of the most important aspects of the course on the design of the structure of a road, such as the classification of different lanes, the meaning and contents of the superstructure, and the basics of dimensioning.
