Objective

The student is able to apply the basic equations of flow technology and mechanical energy balances in the design and dimensioning of pumps and pipelines. The student understands the basic concepts of compressible flows, compression, and vacuum technology. The student is able to dimension pipelines and equipment for gas flows.
Students deepen their knowledge of concepts and equipment related to heat transfer and evaporation. The student is able to dimension heat exchangers with the help of various IT tools.

Content

The course covers the following issues that enhance energy and cost efficiency, operational reliability and quality in sustainable production:
•Piping, tanks and piping accessories
• Pumps and their process engineering dimensioning
• Compressible flows
• Basic concepts and equipment of compression and vacuum technology
• Evaporation and condensation
• Multi-stage evaporators
• Thermal integration and heat transfer networks
• Dimensioning of heat exchangers

Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer Basics

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to describe and explain the basic phenomena of fluid mechanics and heat transfer and the related concepts. The student is able to calculate and size pumps and pipelines and heat exchangers under supervision. The student is able to use a process simulator under supervision.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to describe and explain the basic phenomena of fluid mechanics and heat transfer and the related concepts.
The student is able to calculate, size and select pumps, piping and heat exchangers based on given assumptions.
The student is able to use a process simulator to calculate fluid mechanics problems.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to model and explain the basic phenomena of fluid mechanics and heat transfer and the related concepts.
The student is able to calculate, size and select pumps, pipelines and heat exchangers based on meaningful assumptions. The student is also able to evaluate and modify solutions and the calculation model used if necessary. The student is able to use a process simulator fluently in calculating fluid mechanics problems.
