Objective

The student knows the basics of polymeric chemistry. The student is able to classify natural and synthetic materials into chemical groups and understands the effect of a chemical construction on the characteristics of a material. The student is able to identify natural and synthetic materials by using basic chemical analyzes. The student understands the vulnerability of organic materials to microbes, insects and pests. The student understands the effect of environmental conditions on mold growth. The student is able to identify insects common in museums and the deterioration caused by them.

Content

Theory of natural and synthetic materials. Laboratory assignments.
Construction of natural and polymeric materials and different factors related to strength, solubility and aging of these materials.
Hazardous materials in museums, pests and insects and mold in museum collections.
Environmental conditions causing deterioration and preventive measures.

The student is able to understand the basic concepts and theory related to the course. The student masters the basic skills and knows at a basic level the chemical constructions of materials used in conservation. The student is able evaluate hazardous materials and identify insects. The student is able to acquire information independently.

The student is able to understand the basic concepts and theory related to the course. The student shows good theoretical and applied knowledge. The student masters the basic skills and knows chemical constructions of materials used in conservation. The student is able to evaluate hazardous materials and identify most of destructive insects. The student is able to acquire information independently.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student masters the course content and has achieved excellent level in his/her knowledge and skills. The student shows excellent theoretical and practical knowledge and is able to apply this knowledge well. The student knows well chemical constructions of materials used in conservation. The student is able to evaluate hazardous materials and identify most of the destructive insects. The student is able to acquire information independently and analyze and apply this information.
