Objective

The student understands the main objectives of the museum legislation and the role of museums for achievement the objectives. The student understands how museums document and preserve heritage of culture, nature and art. The student understands how cultural heritage is research, applied and made accessible. The student understands how the emphasis in museum work has developed from the object orientation into the phenomenal and community based orientation.

The student knows the essential heritage legislation and the ethical codes related to conservation. The student is familiar with the key heritage organizations and understands their guidelines and sphere of work (ICOM, ICOMOS, ICCROM).
The student is familiar with the different ways and techniques in preservation of cultural heritage and understands the risks related to it. The student understands the meaning and the methods of preventive conservation and is able to apply her/his knowledge and skills for different cases and circumstances. The student understands the relevance of sustainability and is able to apply it in his/her work.

Museum collections and how they are formed, processes of basic collection management; inventory, storage, collection care and policies, significance.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows the guiding principles of collection and preservation work of memory organizations on a basic level. The student knows the main concepts and theory of museology on a basic level. The student knows how the collections of cultural heritage are research and used. The student masters the basic elements of the course and understands the key contents of the course. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data upon course theme.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows the guiding principles of collection and preservation work of memory organizations and the main concepts and theory of museology. The student shows good knowledge of theoretical and applied museology. The student masters the course complex both in theory and in practice and has shown good practical and theoretical skills. The student’s ability to work independently is sufficient. The student knows how the collections of cultural heritage are research and used. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data upon course theme and he/she is able to analyze this data.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows the guiding principles of collection and preservation work of memory organizations and his/her knowledge upon the main concepts and theory of museology are excellent. The student shows excellent knowledge of theoretical and applied museology and is able to apply his/her knowledge. The student knows how the collections of cultural heritage are research and used. The student is able to fulfill independently both theoretical and practical tasks. The student is able to acquire independently reliable data and analyze and apply this data. The student is able to take part in discussion upon course theme and ground his/her opinion by using relevant concepts. The student is able to give reasons for his/her choices and to apply logically relevant methods and processes by following the established procedure in conservation. The student works independently and shows self-motivation and creativity in problem solving.
