Objective
After completing the course, the student
• is able to participate in applied innovation projects by developing responsible, practical and concrete solutions, products or services in multidisciplinary partnerships to meet current challenges and future needs in the Helsinki metropolitan area and beyond
• understands and applies the principles and methods of innovation in real-life contexts to promote effective solutions and sustainable practices
• is able to combine project-based and network-driven approaches, harnessing creativity and expertise to achieve significant impact at regional, national or international level
• draws on personal strengths and interdisciplinary skills to navigate and thrive in collaborative, multidisciplinary work environments
• promotes a culture of constructive cooperation and negotiation to achieve successful teamwork and common goals
• effectively uses problem-solving, technical, collaboration and communication skills to support team development processes, improving decision-making and innovation outcomes.
Content
The course delves into innovation concepts, development management and the basic principles of building effective teams for innovative projects. Students will engage in collaborative project work and gain hands-on experience in ideation, forward-looking conceptualisation, strategic planning and in-depth customer and user insight. Key areas such as contract management, intellectual property rights, effective communication, publishing, productisation, marketing and implementation planning will be covered to enable students to take their ideas to market. The course will emphasise interdisciplinary teamwork, stakeholder collaboration and networking through practical applications. Finally, students will be introduced to a variety of innovation development tools and methodologies that will provide them with key skills for managing high-impact projects.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student is able to
• develop, together with multidisciplinary actors, innovative practical and concrete solutions, policies, products or services to meet the diverse future needs and current challenges of the metropolitan area
• identify the concept of innovation, the development process and the stages and methods of productisation
• identify their creativity and skills needed for project and network work in regional, national or international development work
• recognise their role in multidisciplinary cooperation and in the working environment
• apply a collaborative negotiation culture and work constructively as part of a development team
• use their problem-solving, collaboration, communication and technical skills in community development and decision-making.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student is able to
• develop, together with multidisciplinary actors, innovative practical and concrete solutions, policies, products or services to meet the diverse future needs and current challenges of the metropolitan area
• define the concept of innovation, the development process and the stages of productisation, and apply development methods to produce a usable output
• apply project and networking skills and their own creativity and expertise in regional, national or international development work
• use their own expertise in a multidisciplinary cooperation and working environment
• can create a collaborative culture of negotiation and smooth teamwork
• can use their problem-solving, collaboration, communication and technical skills in a variety of ways in community development and decision-making.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student is able to
• develop and bring to the table, together with multidisciplinary actors, innovative practical and concrete solutions, policies, products or services that address the diverse future needs and current challenges of the metropolitan area
• define the concept of innovation, the development process and the stages of productisation, and be able to facilitate development work using a variety of methods to achieve a usable output
• build successful project and networking skills and their own creativity and expertise in regional, national or international development work
• can analytically assess their own expertise and learning in a multidisciplinary cooperation and working environment
• successfully develop a collaborative negotiation culture, build good cooperation and help the team to succeed together
• can apply in many ways and efficiently develop his o skills in problem solving, collaboration, technical and communication skills to support the collaborative development processes and joint decision making of the team.
