1. Overview
Name of the degree programme: Degree Programme in Construction Project Management and Structural Engineering
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering, 240 ECTS, 4 years
Mode of studying: Day-time studies
Location: Myllypurontie

This curriculum prepares students for the profession of civil engineer, most of whom will initially work as civil or site engineers, possibly progressing to similar specialist or managerial roles. In the coming years, there will be a large number of jobs for graduating construction engineers in new construction and renovation of an ageing building stock, and an increasing demand for new civil engineers as a result of retiring generations. In addition, sustainable development, reducing carbon emissions, biodiversity, improving energy efficiency in construction, the circular economy in construction, building life cycle management and project management through knowledge and information models will provide a wealth of challenges for civil engineers in the near future.

Construction Engineering degree programme trains construction professionals with a broad range of skills to work in a variety of construction jobs. Broad professional skills include good professional theoretical, practical and methodological knowledge and in-depth expertise in one's own area of specialisation.

In addition to strong professional skills, civil engineering jobs require problem-solving, mathematical and economic thinking, teamwork and leadership skills, versatile IT skills, communication and language skills. On this basis, this curriculum is based on the traditional theoretical competences required for the profession of construction engineer and, in addition, on a competences inventory drawn up in cooperation with companies and associations in the sector. It emphasises practical relevance, learning by doing, problem-solving, cooperation, internationality, in-depth knowledge of the major and specialisation. In addition, sustainable development and digital literacy are included in the different modules of the curriculum, as appropriate.

This curriculum describes the two professional orientations in construction engineering education, which are:
- Structural Engineering
- Construction Project Management

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Typical tasks of a construction engineer include designing structures for residential, commercial and industrial buildings, site works, maintenance and renovation. Jobs are available in engineering and design firms, construction companies, building products industry, public administration and research institutes.

SKILLS DESCRIPTION OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME
The common competences of the degree programme emphasise basic knowledge of construction engineering and construction and the theoretical skills required for studies in the field. At the beginning of the studies, an overall view of the construction industry and the opportunities it offers is created. After orientation, the focus is on upgrading skills and specialisation in the chosen field.

Construction Project Management

The student
- knows the different parts of project management and key concepts
- can apply principles of project management in construction projects
- can create schedules and different forms of schedules for various construction sites
- knows the theoretical bases of quality management and quality assurance and can make a quality assurance plan
- can produce quantity calculations based on items to be used (planning stage), and understands the principles of target price and design management
- can calculate a cost estimate and make a bid based on it, as well as determine a target cost estimate and monitor costs
- can choose the best working method in order to achieve top quality, taking into account time and cost factors
- knows the most common building service systems and how to install them
- knows relevant legislation, contract types, contract document types and principles of procurement
- knows contract documents used in the design phase, can produce documents required by the contract documents to be used on the site
- understands different types of contracts and the differences between them
- understands the role of logistics in the functioning of a construction company and production
- knows the principles of occupational safety and can apply them
- can cooperate with different parties and is proficient in negotiation and communication situations

The student
- knows the rules, standards and regulations related to structure design
- knows the characteristics of building materials and can take these into account when designing structures
- understands the statics, mechanics and functionality of structures
- can determine different loads of a building and its structures and divide these to different structures based on the static functionality of structure
- can calculate forces related to structures
- can dimension structures based on the loads in such a way that the structures are sufficiently secured against failure and harmful deformation
