Objective
The student masters the technical fundamentals required to write musical melodies, harmonies, rhythms and forms. The student is able to analyze and creatively produce stylistically appropriate pieces of music. The student is able to learn music by ear and is able to work independently.
Content
The course has two components: theory and aural skills.
Theory:
- small musical forms
- the writing of progressions of triads, four-note chords and extended chords
- the writing of single accompanying melody line (polyphony)
- harmonizing the melody with soli voicings
- formal structures of different eras
Aural Skills:
- major and minor melodies with altered chromatic tones
- blues-scale melodies
- two-part polyphony (melody plus simple accompaniment line)
- harmonic progressions in three to five-note chords, including chromaticism
- deviations from the key.
Qualifications
Fundamentals of Musicianship for Professional Musicians 2 or equivalent knowledge and skills.
