Objective
The student knows how to function as a member of an ensemble. The student knows various styles of jazz and can delineate their role in an ensemble both as soloist and accompanist. The student plays or sings repertoire of different eras of jazz from memory, and is capable of taking on responsibilities related to working in an ensemble. The student develops interaction skills and can reflect on their own work and that of others, as well as express themselves both orally and in writing. The students is able to write and read music notation and knows the basics of jazz improvisation.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed
To pass the course, the student:
- is able to rehearse independently and under supervision
- has learned the course repertoire to a satisfactory level (for example, is able to perform from memory if needed)
- is able to play their instrument and perform the repertoire idiomatically
- is able to communicate with both the ensemble and the audience
- understands their role in an ensemble and can communicate their own musical ideas.
