Objective

The student is able to articulate the basic principles of copyright legislation, knows modes of operation regarding music copyright, and can apply them both from a creative and performing musician’s standpoint. The student is able to specify important contract and reporting practices, for example, those relating to the publishing and distribution of music. The student is able to describe important professional organizations involved in copyright and advocacy.

The student can discern the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, taxation and contractual practices, and the differences between various forms of enterprise and their applicability in their own operations. The student knows how to search for information on domestic funding systems for creative industries and can describe how to write a good funding or grant application. The student is able to design and implement the productional content and different stages of operation of a complete music project.

Content

The players in the music business and their duties. Fundamentals of copyright systems and specific issues from the viewpoints of the creative and performing musician as well as the record producer. The central copyright and professional organizations and their services. The notifications, licences, and identifiers required for writing and producing music professionally. Entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Grants and applications. Design and documentation of the production branch of a music project.

Prerequisites

The student can describe the attributes of entrepreneurial attitude and specify the skills and knowledge associated with entrepreneurship. The student is able to recognize their core competencies in regards to their employment. The student knows how to search for information on music business and how to apply it in their own work.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to articulate the main principles of copyright law and its application to the music industry. The student is able to specify the important contract and reporting practices in the music industry. The student is able to describe important professional organizations involved in copyright and advocacy.

The student is able to specify the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, tax and contract practices, as well as the differences between different forms of enterprise and their suitability to their own activities. The student is able to describe the features of a good grant application. The student is able to complete assignments according to schedule. The student is able to design and implement the productional content and different stages of operation of a complete music project.
