Objective

The student is able to define and analyze musical works and music writers from different eras and styles. The student is able to differentiate how music and its elements are perceived and to analyze the musical content of the work as well as place it into a historical and stylistic context. The student knows how to search for professional and scholarly information from different sources, analyze it in a critical manner and apply it in their own work. The student is able to make an accurate transcription of a recording containing several different instruments and render it in notated score form. The student is capable of reproducing recording, mixing and production techniques from different eras using reverse engineering techniques.

Content

Lectures. Independent and collaborative studio work. Making accurate transcriptions. Analysis of music and musical works. Familiarity with professional and scholarly literature.

Prerequisites

The student knows how to write music and lyrics independently and in teams both as given assignments and as self-initiated work. The student can operate in various genres of popular music in a professional and creative manner. The student knows how to listen to and explore their own and others' music and professional writings analytically and apply the acquired knowledge to their own music. The student perceives various musical trends, understands the workings of the music industry, and can apply the findings to their own artistic and professional activities as well as career planning.

The student masters studio music production as a whole and can plan and carry out a professional record production. The student is able to describe the various stages of making a recording and the special characteristics of different projects. The student is capable of acting as an artistic producer of a recording and can execute it with high technical standards. The student is able to make technically and artistically balanced mixes of different music styles and applications and is able to take advantage of the possibilities offered by computer-based studio technology.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to define and analyze music of different eras and genres, their representative works and music writers. The student is able to specify how various parameters of music are organized and is able to analyze and place musical works in historical and stylistic context. The student is able to reproduce the recording, mixing and production methods of different eras using “reverse engineering”. The student is able to complete assignments according to schedule.
