Objective
After completing the course, the student will have a clear understanding of the musical characteristics of jazz through listening, playing, singing and transcription examples, as well as through knowledge of the history of jazz. After completing the course, the student will be able to identify and search for information in the history of jazz and apply their knowledge critically and creatively to their professional activities.
Content
Jazz Skills is divided into two parts: Jazz History and Jazz Theory.
The history section deals with the subject from the perspectives of person and ensemble history, and the central phenomena and events of jazz music, aiming to give the student a clear picture of the development of jazz. The history section contains audio examples and assignments, as well as written materials. The subject is examined mainly from the 1900s to the 2000s. The course will include listening to important artists and ensembles, exploring musical phenomena, aesthetics and characteristics of jazz styles, learning about the music technology of the era and the significance of jazz in time and society. Teaching takes place through lectures, independent work and group work.
The aim of the theory section is to give the student a clear picture of the musical characteristics of jazz through examples of listening, playing, singing and transcription. During the course, the student must make one solo transcription of a major jazz musician of their choice. There will also be other set assignments. Teaching takes place through lectures, independent work and group work.
Qualifications
In the theory section, the prerequisites are basic skills and knowledge of music theory, chord symbols, and elementary ear training.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
In order to receive an approved grade, the student:
- Knows and recognizes the characteristics of jazz from different eras and styles
- Is able to identify and search for information on the history of jazz and apply their knowledge critically and creatively to their professional activities
- Is able to work independently and in teams
- Completes and passes the exam on jazz history and the set assignments
- Can write one band transcription in the theory section and passes the set assignments.
