Objective

Anatomy 2ects
Students name the bones of upper limbs and shoulder area as well as can palpate the most important of them. Students can explain the structure and function of joints in the upper limbs and shoulder area as well as identify muscles in the area. They describe the function of muscles understanding the significance of their insertion to movement. Students can name the most important structures of the spine and explain their significance. They identify the bones of the thorax and describe the function of the most important muscles of the trunk. Students are able to use professional terminology of the structures.

Subjects related to medical studies 3 ects
Physiatry/Musculoskeletal diseases 1 ects. Students familiarize themselves with the musculoskeletal diseases common in Finland as well as injuries not primarily treated in orthopaedics. Students apply knowledge and skills gained from physiatry to their own profession when examining and treating patients of different ages with musculoskeletal injuries, diseases and pain. Students know and understand the main examination and treatment practices of physiatry. Students are able to evaluate the role of their profession as part of the preventative, physiatric treatment protocol. Orthopaedics 1 ects. Students understand the pathophysiology, characteristic symptoms and medical grounds for diagnosis of the most common orthopaedic diseases and traumas. Students are familiar with the most common surgical methods used in Finland, basics of prevention of orthopaedic problems as well as the role of rehabilitation as part of the orthopaedic treatment protocol. Students apply their orthopaedic competence to support professional studies of their own field. Surgery 1 ects. Students familiarize themselves with surgical treatment protocols as part of health care. Students are familiar with the most common types of wounds, various suturing techniques and basics of wound care. They familiarize themselves with surgically treated diseases and their examination and treatment protocols. Students are familiar with the role of their own profession as part of the postoperative care. Students are aware of the most common surgical complications.

Medical studies:
Physiatry/ Musculoskeletal diseases 1 ects. Classification based on body parts and areas of musculoskeletal disorders: neck, back, hip, and the most common diseases and injuries of the limbs. Physiatry is based on tissue types: ligaments, joints, muscles, cartilage and nerve tissue and their central pathophysiological features. Examination and recovery process of tissues. Orthopaedics 1 etcs. Fractures and their treatment. Major orthopaedic problems regarding neck, back, hip and limbs in relation to bone, joints, tendon and ligament structures in Finland. Characteristic symptoms and the most common examination and treatment protocols of orthopaedic problems. Surgery 1 ects. Wounds, wound care. Surgically treated national diseases in Finland; major causes, symptoms and main treatment protocols concerning gastroenterological, cardiovascular, respiratory and oncological diseases. Burns.
