Objective

After completing the course, the students will be able to communicate in Finnish in their work environment and relate to the field-specific or the general work related information in writing and speaking. The students will identify the differences between the formal and the informal style. They will understand both the field-specific and the general professional texts. The students can also both discuss and write clear and structured texts about the professional topics or work in general. The students will know how to improve their language skills independently. The students’ communication skills will correspond to the skill level B1.2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

Oral and written professional interactive situations. The variation in the register of language (differences between the formal and informal language).
Widening the vocabulary related to the professional field as well as understanding and producing professional text types. Revising grammar structures such as verb government, tenses, connecting sentences, and sentence types. Basics of language editing (punctuation, capital letters and compound words) and the structures of written language (recognizing participles and infinitive or participial constructions). Strengthening language learning strategies.

Prerequisites

Previous Finnish language competence will correspond at least to the skill level B1.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Starting level: B1.1
Target level: B1.2. The course also provides guidance and tools for acquiring the language proficiency level B2 (independent user)
