Objective

Students are familiar with community work as a form of social services that acknowledges the social and political transformative power of communities. They are aware of the existance of different of types of communities, including geographic, identity or special interest communities and their characteristics. Students are able to analyse and apply appropriate creative methods and community-based strategies in urban contexts.

Content

Historical, ideological, and political roots of community work. Community Work and European urban contexts. Power, empowerment and Community Work. Various participatory teaching methods and creative methods are used to increase joint learning and to create a link to community methods. Aims in community work methods (conflict and consensus models). Simple Finnish vocabulary and phrases used in working with diverse communities.
