Objective
After completing the course, the student
• knows the basics of analytical chemistry
• knows how to calculate calculations related to analytics and acquires good theoretical knowledge and skills related to the use of basic analytical work methods
• knows the principles of formation and structure of organic compounds
• is able to name and draw organic compounds and understands the fundamentals of organic reactions.
Content
• Acid-base equilibria, pH, buffer solutions
• Gravimetric analysis
• Titrimetric analysis (acid-base, complexometric, precipitation and redox titrations)
• Structure and nomenclature of organic compounds
• Fundamentals of organic reactions and reaction mechanism

The student
• knows how to prepare different chemical solutions
• knows the principles of gravimetric analysis
• knows titrations based on different reaction types and is able to calculate the amount of analyte in the sample after sample treatment and based on the direct titration
• reports the results with the right number of significant figures
• knows the principles of the structure and nomenclature of organic compounds
• knows the different reaction types and the fundamentals of reaction mechanism.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student
• understands the solution equilibria
• understands the importance of different factors in doing gravimetric analyses
• understands the more complex analytical processes such as the back-and indirect titrations
• is able to determine titration end points with the first and second derivate
• understands how the structure affects the properties of an organic compound and is able to name organic compounds
• understands how the different compounds react and the fundamentals of reaction mechanism.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student
• is able to calculate the buffer solution equilibrium calculations and prepare buffer solutions without further instructions
• is able to apply the theory and practice of gravimetric analysis
• understands the solution equilibria and the theoretical basis of the analysis
• knows the factors that influence the success of the analysis
• is able to name polyfuctional organic compounds
• is able to explain with the reaction type and reaction mechanism a reaction product.
