Objective

On completion of the course, the student
• knows the abbreviations, symbols and line types used in structural drawings
• knows the most common abbreviations, symbols and line types used in other types of drawings related to construction
• can draw a section from a given plan drawing using BIM application
• can make reinforcement drawings using BIM application
• can explain the reinforcement of a structure from a drawing
• understands the principles of limit state design in structural design
• understands the division of loads in the structure and explain structural models for hand and computer calculations
• can determine the permanent loads, live loads as well as wind and snow loads acting on a building
• can compose the ULS load combinations for a structure
• can compose the load combinations of a structure for SLS design
• can find information related to loads and ways of composing structural design documents
• understands the importance of account of works as a design document
• can explain the contents of account of works
• knows the principles of the Eurocode design method
• understands the requirements of Finnish National Annex as complementary information to Eurocodes
• can find supplementary information about Eurocode related standards
• is familiar with the execution standards at the extent required by a structural engineer.

Statics, Basics of Structural Mechanics, Basics of BIM

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can
• explain the reinforcement of a structure from a drawing
• produce a reinforcement drawing of a beam and slab using BIM application
• explain the most common symbols used in structural design
• explain the meaning of different line types in drawings
• draw a model for a structure type using a BIM application
• calculate the dead weight of a structure, live loads, snow and wind loads based on simplified assumptions on the safe side
• draw a simple structural model, understand its loading and the distribution of the loads on different model members
• find relevant information from Eurocodes, National annexes and execution standards.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student
• can explain the reinforcement of a structure from a drawing
• can draw the reinforcement of a structure based on a description using BIM application
• knows the symbols, abbreviations and line types used in structural drawings, including the most common symbols used in HVAC design
• understands the significance of consequence class in ULS design
• produces structural models for structural design without problems and can explain the relevant loads and the division of loads on different model members
• understands critical loading situations controlling the design of a structure
• can calculate the dead weight of a structure, as well as live loads, snow and wind loads.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
• draw a section of a complex building using BIM application
• determine the snow load of a complex building
• determine the wind load of a high building
• differentiate between the total wind load and wind load on surfaces
• explain the division of loads on structural members
• determine the controlling loading condition for sizing of a structural member.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student can
• explain the reinforcement of a structure from a drawing
• produce a reinforcement drawing of a beam and slab using BIM application
• explain the most common symbols used in structural design
• explain the meaning of different line types in drawings
• draw a model for a structure type using a BIM application
• calculate the dead weight of a structure, live loads, snow and wind loads based on simplified assumptions on the safe side
• draw a simple structural model, understand its loading and the distribution of the loads on different model members
• find relevant information from Eurocodes, National annexes and execution standards.
