Descriptions

The expertise acquired during the studies at the University of Applied Sciences in the field of fashion and clothing is based on the overall management of the clothing processes needed in the society. Studying is both work life oriented and international. Collaboration projects and development projects integrate the studies into the networks and practices of work life. In the core of education, there is competence linked to responsibility in the international field of operation.

The clothing companies in Finland need highly educated experts, who see the big picture of the modern business operations in the field. In addition to the professional skills in the field, they understand the responsibilities of the industry and possess social skills for interacting between different countries and cultures. They are able to monitor the continuous transformation in the field, utilise their expertise and problem-solving skills flexibly when developing working life. They master the standards in the industry and the constantly changing applications.

The Bachelors of Culture and Arts (Fashion and Clothing) are able to acquire, analyse, and apply information in an innovative way when problem solving and developing work life. They take responsibility for the environment and the society. The graduates know the materials and their properties, as well as the technical solutions for the garments. They are able to apply knowledge creatively into different product groups. They master both the form and quality control, measurement taking, and manufacturing instructions of the commercial collections in the international production chain. The graduates have a great competence in both collection and assortment knowledge combined with product management skills and abilities to apply and implement trends for the customers. They also possess marketing and business skills. The Bachelors have gained expertise in the computer skills as well as have good abilities in both team and project work.

The clothing industry is one of the largest industries in the global economy. Bachelors of Culture and Arts (Fashion and Clothing) can be placed in a variety of roles in the business. They know the Finnish and international clothing field and are able to act as experts in the global network.

Metropolia’s Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing is unique in Finland in producing graduates in the industrial product management taking into account the entire life cycle of the garment. The programme educates experts with a wide scale of competence for clothing companies: expertise in the form and quality management of the industrially manufactured garments; responsible team players for collection and assortment design; experts for managing and acquiring the commercial and productional processes in the field; expertise in the clothing business, importing, agency work, purchasing and selling.

The curriculum has been compiled taking into account the wide range of competences needed in the field of fashion and clothing; the requirement for responsibility and sustainable development; digitalisation and internationalisation; and it was first published in 2020.

The Bachelor’s degree (UAS) specialized in fashion and clothing provides eligibility to apply for the Master's Degree Programme in Fashion and Clothing in Metropolia or for the admission towards another suitable Master's degree.
