Descriptions

The curriculum offers students a learning path which enables a flexible study process including a provision of multidisciplinary studies from other degree programmes or a variety of general studies available for all students at Metropolia UAS.
The curriculum also serves as a source of information for the working environment and our international partners.

The provision of studies consists of study units providing a minimum of 5 ECTS credits.
The multidisciplinary approach to learning is also embraced by offering students the possibility of choosing a multidisciplinary, elective study module of 15 ECTS, also comprising one or more multidisciplinary module. The course offering has been planned to enable students to include 30 credit points per term.

The starting point for learning consist of situations and problems arising from professional practices, and of trying to find evidence-based solutions for them. Some courses are provided, when applicable, as projects that develop the student's field of study. The students get a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of their subject in learning environments that support their learning, such as drug therapy and simulation learning environments. Education has been developed by improving opportunities for digital learning. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.
The students are assessed in the following areas of competence: learning skills, ethics, professional skills, work community competence, innovation competence, multiculturalism and technological competence.
Students become proficient in continuous development of their competence and further studies. In the early stages of their studies, before interacting with patients, students have a period of work placement, practising basic plain imaging in a simulated environment in a radiography imaging classroom. Having gained a more advanced level, the students practice radiography and radiotherapy in different health care imaging, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine clinical placements. Study in laboratory environments and clinical placements account for 75 ECTS.
The curriculum meets the demands of degree requirements, competence and development needs of the working environment as well as the requirements for national and international cooperation. It also reflects a student-oriented and learning- and competence-based foundation. The learning outcome descriptions indicate to the students what competence is expected from them and help them assess their own progress.
The learning objectives have been determined in cooperation with representatives from both the working life and the UAS and therefore express the students’ competence levels and readiness for different types of of work. A competence-based curriculum enables student mobility within and between other UASs. In addition, it makes the recognition and credit transfer for previously acquired competence (AHOT) easier and enables the comparison of degrees obtained in different countries.
International studies are part of the learning path of each learner in the form of international exchange, practice placement or internationalisation at home studies, such as common core requirement studies in English or Finnish degree programmes or open studies in international network learning environments.

Objective

The degree in radiography and radiation therapy corresponds to the EQF6 level. The Radiography and radiotherapy curriculum takes into account the Radiation Act 859/2018, the Government Decree on Ionizing Radiation 1034/2018 (Government Council 2018b) and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health's Decree on Ionizing Radiation 1044/2018 (Government Council 2018a).

One has competence to work responsibly in diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, interventional radiology and nuclear medicine units. Radiographer is responsible for patient safety in operations and participates in the development of operations.
