Descriptions

The curriculum for the Degree Programme in Podiatry is built on semester-specific themes, which are based on core competences in podiatry. One of the themes covers a 15-credit module of elective studies, which each student may put together from Metropolia’s multidisciplinary provision. The studies also include a 10-credit innovation project, which is carried out in multidisciplinary teams.

The competence-based curriculum and its learning outcomes describe what kinds of competences students are expected to achieve and help students assess their own existing competence and future learning. Students’ individual choices and recognition of prior learning, complete with flexible implementation models, allow students to build their own individual learning pathways. Each student’s own learning pathway is described in their individual study plan.

Students have opportunities to participate in exchanges at international partner institutions located in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. They may also complete work placement periods abroad. During their studies, students participate in lectures and other instruction provided by international experts and visiting lecturers. Participation in brief international events, such as international congresses, may be included as part of the studies. Freemover exchanges are also possible with other institutions besides the programme’s partner institutions.

The studies include clinical practise, which is partially completed as practicals at the university and training at a university service unit and partially through work placements outside the university. Work placement sites include health clinics, hospitals, private podiatry enterprises and enterprises manufacturing orthotics. Work placement opportunities are also available outside the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

Representatives of the world of work are involved in development of instruction, while co-operation with the world of work is also carried out as part of several courses and in various thesis and other projects. The curriculum for the Degree Programme in Podiatry is based on national and international recommendations defining the core competences in podiatry.
