Tavoitteet

Knowledge and understanding:
Based on fundamental physics, chemistry, and mathematics knowledge, students will study basic semiconductor devices from microscopic viewpoints, such as solar cells and LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). In addition, students will make one or two electronic circuits using semiconductor devices including a light sensor during the class. Students will be able to understand how to work a sensor or LED in the electronic circuit through the making of the electronic circuits.

Skills:
Students will be able to experience how semiconductor devices like an operational amplifier (OP Amp) work effectively in the electronic circuit to detect signals from the sensor. Students will also be able to understand basic electronic circuits and make them from electronic parts.

Practice and Lab work:
During the class, students will make several electronic circuits by themselves.

Sisältö

1. A demonstration of an electronic circuit using a light sensor, transistor, and LED (Light Emitting Diode).
2. What is the p-n junction? The p-n junction is based on the diode, light sensor, LED, and solar cell. We will explain them based on electrical current in semiconductors from the movements of electrons and holes. (Lecture + hands-on practice)
3. What is the LED? Why does it emit light? We will explain them from a microscopic viewpoint. (Lecture)
4. Construction of electronic circuits using semiconductor devices after learning about some semiconductor devices (hands-on practice)
