Objective

On completion of the course the student knows how concrete structures are used as the frame material of a building. The student can recognise concrete structures, reinforced concrete structures and prestressed concrete structures.

The student can determine the material properties of concrete and reinforcement steel as well as the needed concrete cover based on the durability requirements and functional demands.
The student is able to perform needed ULS and SLS checks for a beam including the determination of required time dependent material properties, and to design an appropriate reinforcement arrangement.
The student can calculate the anchorage length and the lap length for reinforcing bars.
The student can determine creeping, drying shrinkage and time-dependent concrete strength.
The student can calculate the deflection and crack width of a reinforced concrete beam under bending moment.

Content

1. Properties of concrete
2. ULS and SLS design of beam

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

On completion of the course the student can
- explain typical concrete building frameworks, the components of such frameworks and their loads
- determine the material properties of reinforced concrete and reinforcing steel
- determine the thickness of a protective concrete cover
- determine the effective depth of a reinforced structure
- calculate the needed reinforcement in a beam under bending moment
- determine the creep factor of concrete from EN 1992-1-1 curves
- determine the final value of drying shrinkage for a concrete member
- deal with SLS actions and combine them according to EN 1990 and 1991
- estimate the deflection and crack width of a concrete member from tables.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
- calculate the shear capacity of members not requiring shear reinforcement
- calculate the shear capacity of a shear reinforced beam
- determine the creep factor of concrete from EN 1992-1-1 curves
- determine the time dependency of drying shrinkage
- determine the autogenous shrinkage of concrete
- determine SLS actions and combine them according to EN 1990 and 1991
- calculate the deflection and crack width of a concrete member.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
- calculate anchorage length for reinforcing bars
- calculate lap length for reinforcing bars
- determine optimal reinforcement for each section of a beam according to the moment and shear force distribution
- perform sophisticated SLS design considering both the requirements of the studied structure and those of the adjoining structures
- consider the effect of creep to the behaviour of structures
- calculate the deflection and crack width from both short-term actions and long-term actions and further estimate the behaviour of the structure according to the results
- calculate shrinkage induced deflection
- discuss the cracking mechanism of reinforced concrete
- discuss how load history influences the behaviour of structures.
