Research and Development Methods (5ECTS)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course students will gain the basic know-how for research and development work and be familiar with the methods and models of development work. Student will understand the basic concepts of quantitative and qualitative research, be familiar with the research process and the principles of data analysis and interpretation and be able to communicate professionally in various research and development functions. Student will be familiar with research reporting practices and able to apply them in research and development work.

Further information for students

Kurssin tavoitteena on kehittää opiskelijoita ymmärtämään erilaisia metodologisia perinteitä ja niiden vaikutuksia tutkimukseen ja tiedonmuodostukseen. Opiskelijat oppivat tunnistamaan eri laadullisten ja määrällisten menetelmien mahdollisuudet ja rajoitukset tiedonkeruun ja analysoinnin eri vaiheissa. Opiskelija kykenee soveltamaan tietojaan ja taitojaan empiirisen tutkimuksen tai kehitystyön suunnitteluun valitulla toimialalla.

Kurssin jälkeen opiskelijalla on valmiudet

1. ymmärtää tiedontuotannon merkityksen liike-elämässä, tieteessä ja yhteiskunnassa
2. tunnistaa tärkeimmät tutkimus- ja kehitystavat ja analyysimenetelmät
2. valita ja soveltaa omaan työhönsä sopivia menetelmiä
3. arvioida tutkimuksen validiteettia
4. ymmärtää hyvän tieteellisen käytännön periaatteet
5. viestiä tutkimukseen ja kehitystyöhön liittyvistä asioista

Assessment methods and criteria

Kurssi rakentuu aktiiviselle vuorovaikutukselle ja osallistuvaan tiedon ja osaamisen luontiin. Osaaminen näytetään seuraavin suorituksin:

1. Jatkuva osaamisen näyttö 20 pistettä. Opiskelijalla on mahdollisuus näyttää osaamistaan kurssin
ajan. Arviointi on jatkuvaa ja integroitua. Jatkuva tarkoittaa sitä, että arviointi tapahtuu koko kurssin
aikana. Integroitu tarkoittaa sitä, että jokainen arviointi vaikuttaa kokonaisarvosanaan ja mikä tahansa
arvioitava osa voi kattaa useita kurssin oppimistavoitteita.

2. Luennolla tehtävät harjoitukset 30 pistettä.

3. Luentojen teemaan liittyvät kotitehtävät. Tehtävät koskettavat seuraavia aihealueita: Mitä on
tutkimus? Määrälliset menetelmät. Laadulliset menetelmät. Kehitysmenetelmät. Oman lopputyön
metodivalinnat. Reflektio. Osuudesta voi saada maksimissaan 50 pistettä. Tarkemmat ohjeet annetaan
kurssin aikana.

The student has achieved the course objectives fairly. The student will be able to identify, define and use the course subject area’s concepts and models. The student understands the criteria and principles of the expertise development.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement on some areas. The student is able to define the course concepts and models and are able to justify the analysis. The student is able to apply his/her knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. The student understands the importance of expertise in the field of business and is able to analyze his/her own expertise.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. The student masters commendably the course subject area’s concepts and models. The student is able to make justified and fluent analysis and to present concrete development measures. The student is well prepared to apply his/her knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. The student is able to analyze the business sector expertise and the development of his/her own expertise.
