Objective
Students
- possess midwifery skills related to a normal and abnormal postpartum period
- are able to care for and counsel women who have given vaginal birth or who have had caesarean section and their families during the postpartum period
- manage the care of healthy newborns and are capable of counselling parents with the care of their newborn baby
- identify special needs requiring special attention regarding the wellbeing of the newborn and know how to proceed accordingly
- implement breastfeeding counselling according to the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative Programme
- observe and support the early interaction between the parents and the newborn baby/babies
- understand the significance of preventative actions and early intervention to the health and wellbeing of the family

Central concepts related to midwifery skills during the postpartum period
Recovering from normal childbirth and possible complications
Care of vaginal delivery patients and caesarean section patients
Delivery debriefing
Health education and family-centred counselling during puerperium
Care and observation of a healthy newborn baby
Breastfeeding counselling according to the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative Programme
Early interaction and ways to support it

Further information
Precence at orientation, simulations, laborations and seminars are oblicatory. Lectures will be held mainly virtually because of the pandemic situation. Laborations and simulations will be held in small groups. The exam is scheduled in the end of cource. Timetable for re-exams are scheduled during orientation lecture.
Students must confirm their attendance for a course implementation by being present when tuition begins or in another manner agreed with the lecturer. Students who are unable to attend the first teaching session due to illness may also confirm their attendance by informing the lecturer of this in advance.
