Learning outcomes

The student understands approaches to project management and leadership, is aware of the key project management concepts, and knows how to define, plan and follow-up a project. The student is able to apply business research and development methods for the analysis of a real life case in project management. Student can critically evaluate and analyse the project results and report the project.

Content

• Project leadership, project models and methods
• Project work tools at the initiation & planning stage: project charter, statement of work, responsibility matrix, communication plan, project proposal
• Project work tools at the execution & control stage: work breakdown structure, scheduling and evaluations
• Team management, team leadership, clear communication and other project skills
• Evaluating and measuring: project progress and its success
• Project reporting and stakeholder management

Completed higher education degree (Bachelor level)

Online materials and self-studies.

The language of tuition is English.¨

Location and time

Exceptionally, one introductory session for Business Informatics Master´s students is face-to-face (Business Informatics Master´s programme) on 29.1.2020, at 13-16 (it is an additional session).

The course for all the students is fully online.

Pre-requisites:
the students are recommended to obtain (from Metropolia e-library) and get acquainted with the recommended course books:

Student workload

The student workload is 5 credits including self-studies and completing individual assignments (appx.135 hours, calculating 1 credit as appx. 27 hours).

Assignment outline:
The course contains a series of questions to check the recommended readings.
The main assignment is a reflection-based report, done individually. The student applies his/her learnings for the analysis of a real life project management case.

Content scheduling

Course contents:
- Project management key concepts
- Project management key documents and tools (work breakdown structure, scheduling, estimations)
- Project leadership, team management & other project management skills
- Evaluating and measuring: project work, project skills and success.
- Project reporting.

Further information for students

Additionally, the course prepares the student to take a Project Management Certification Exam (IPMA/PRY Finland) in spring 2021, organized by Metropolia for Master´s students who studied Project Management. The exam is scheduled after the course ends, the dates will be informed by Metropolia closer to the Exam. Participation is voluntary.

Sufficient performance: has completed basic requirements to pass the course and has made an attempt to apply and articulate concepts and information both verbally and in writing but has not made enough effort overall. The student has demonstrated little effort, interest and motivation for individual or team activities / assignments and the output is rather weak.

Satisfactory
Sufficient performance: has completed basic requirements to pass the course and has made an attempt to apply and articulate concepts and information both verbally and in writing but has not made enough effort overall. The student has demonstrated little effort, interest and motivation for individual or team activities / assignments and the output is rather weak.

Good
Good overall performance: can apply and articulate concepts and information well both verbally and in writing, certain areas of individual or team output require further attention; shows appropriate level of interest and motivation in individual and team activities. Good presentation delivery and analysis.

Excellent
Excellent performance in all elements of the course: shows interest and motivation in individual and team activities and assignments, fully applies and clearly articulates concepts and information both verbally and in writing. The student is able to support his/her argument with references to the recommended reading and lecture content. Excellent presentation, delivery and analysis.

The course is assessed on the 0 (failed) – 5 (excellent) grading scale.
