Objective
On completion of the course the student will
- understand map projections and map coordinate transformations
- know how a map is a user interface to spatial data
On completion of the course the student will be able to
- use and produce maps and map data
Content
Map coordinate systems and map projections; the theoretical basis of cartography and visual communication; spatial data modeling and its cartographic presentation; thematic mapping; planning a map user interface; internet and WEB requirements for map production
Location and time
Kurssi järjestetään aikavälillä 25.8.-8.12.2025. Kaikki opetus tapahtuu Myllypuron kampuksella.
Materials
Opintojaksolla tarjotaan kaikki tarvittava oppimateriaali.
Teaching methods
Kurssi sisältää viikoittaisia luentoja. Tämän lisäksi kurssi sisältää kartan luomisen 3D-Win-ohjelmalla ja kantakartan vektoroinnin MicroStation-ohjelmalla. 2. periodissa on harjoitustilaisuuksia tätä varten. 1. periodissa on joukko pienempiä karttojen ominaisuuksiin ja koordinaatistoihin liittyviä tehtäviä, jotka eivät vaadi erillisen ohjelman käyttöä.
Exam schedules
Tentti järjestetään 8.12.2025. Uusintatentin mahdollisuus on maanmittaustekniikan ammattiaineiden uusintatilaisuuksissa.

Student is able to read map. Student has basic knowledge of cartographic generalization and knows the principles of cartographic projections and koordinate systems

Student knows the koordinate systems and realisations used in Finland, Finnish map sheet system and understands the principles of creating different kind of maps (printing, web and mobile)
