Objective

Learning outcomes:
The students can describe the basic structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system and the innervation the upper limb. The students understand the importance of the nervous system as a regulator of human activity. The students recognize the effects of central nervous system disorders on human functioning and functional ability. The students are familiar with the symptoms of neurological and pediatric neurological diseases common in Finland and know the clinical examination and treatment methods of neurological diseases. The students are familiar with the principles of prevention, recommendations of treatment and rehabilitation of neurological diseases.

Content:
- Structure and functioning of the nerve cell
- Main features of nervous system development
- Structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system
- Sense of position and movement, sense of balance, pain, sense of touch
- Upper limb innervation and common upper limb nerve injuries
- Critical stages in neurological development during the foetal period
- The impact of external factors on prenatal neurological development and the illness/disability of a small child
- Sensory processing disorders, their examination and treatment
- Diseases that impair motor activity, their examination and treatment
- Pain, headache, dizziness and states of paralysis
- Common medicine and their effects on occupational performance
- The most common neurological and pediatric neurological disorders and rehabilitation practices
