Objective
On completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in communication in familiar everyday and professional situations and his/her language proficiency will be enough to take care of quite many types of practical arrangements. He/she will be able to understand the main points in ordinary texts and also conclude details from the context. The student will be able to write short descriptions, messages and a very simple texts related to job search. He/she masters the basic everyday vocabulary, structures, some idiomatic expressions and the most common means to create cohesion in the text. The student’s communication skills will correspond at least to the skills level A2.2 and possibly in some skills categories the level B1.1. as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

- oral and written communication in everyday contexts: education and work, service situations, information about Finnish culture and society
- grammatical structures, such as using the verb tenses, verb rections, plural forms, comparing adjectives and adverbs, present and past tense of the passive
- key characteristics of formal and informal style

This Finnish as a second language course is open to all Metropolia degree students and also students in Metropolia Open University of Applied Sciences.
The course emphasizes the vocabulary and language use situations in the field of healthcare.
If you have a similar course offered by your degree, the recommendation is to primarily take that course.
Good studying skills and a lot of independent work is required. Book time for homework and independent studying on your calendar at least 4 h/week.

- is able to build understandable texts, messages and descriptions about familiar topics
and write a very simple CV and job application
- is able to use the language in formal and informal style following the given instructions
- is able to apply his/her skills in leisure, study and work related situations following the given instructions

The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. The student
- is able to participate in ordinary service and professional situations with some support of the communication partner
- is able to understand many types of texts concerning the everyday life even though the topic is not related to his/her immediate surroundings
- is able to write understandable texts, messages, descriptions related to everyday life and a simple CV and job application.
- is able to apply his/her skills in situations in leisure time, studies and work.
