Objective

On completion of the course, the student is familiar with the manufacturing technology of steel structures and the most important material properties used in steel design as well as the most important government requirements for the steel construction design. The student can explain the basis for the cross-section classifications of sections, determine the cross-section classification for the sections and calculate section resistances against axial force, shear force and bending moment and combined stresses. The student understands the concept of lateral buckling and can design a lateral buckling restrained beam structure. The student understands the meaning of buckling in the design of compressed structural elements and can take it into account in the design. The student knows the design principles of bolted and welded connections and is able to design a simple bolted/welded connection and knows the basic principles of installing steel structures.
