Objective

On completion of the course, the student will know the composition of natural stones and how these elements affect the qualities of the stone.
The student will be able to conclude the qualities of natural stone constructions based on his/her knowledge of stone material.
The student will be familiar with the most common stone structures in buildings, and their dimensioning. The student will be able to apply stone to architectural design.
The student will know how bricks were manufactured in different times and how the manufacturing
techniques affect the quality of bricks. The student will be familiar with the structural qualities of bricks and different brick test methods.
The student will be able to identify and date different types of brick constructions and be familiar with the basics of brickwork.
The student will be familiar with the most common brick structures in buildings, and their dimensioning. The student will be able to apply brick construction to architectural design.
The student will know how concrete is made and what the characteristics of concrete material are. The student will be able to identify and date different types of concrete constructions and know the basics of concrete and mosaic concrete work techniques.
The student will be familiar with the most common concrete structures in buildings, and their dimensioning. The student will be able to apply concrete construction to architectural design.
The student will be familiar with the surface treatments of concrete.

Content

The structure and characteristics of natural stone material. The basics of building constructions made of natural stone. Identification of natural stones. Recognising the building constructions made of natural stone.
Stone structures in construction work and their history.
The knowledge of brick manufacturing techniques and the science of brick materials. The basics of brick
constructions and their history. Analysing bricks by their outlook.
Design of brick structures in buildings, and their dimensioning.
How to make concrete and mosaic concrete and their material science. The basics of concrete
constructions and their history. Research of concrete surfaces by their outlook.
Design of concrete structures in buildings, and their dimensioning.
Surface treatments of concrete.

Student workload

Obtaining a mark of the course requires 80% participation in classroom instruction and guidance, etc.
Student´s workload is 27 h / ects, which includes contact teaching and independent work of the student.
Studies and the working load of the rehearsals are sized as per the all-time studies.
Obtaining a mark of the course requires that all course assignments are done satisfactorily.
If the course has a preliminary exam, it must be passed before student will start the course.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is familiar with the course subjects on a satisfactory level.
The student has often been absent from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and rehearsals has been unsatisfactory.
The capacity to formulate relevant problems associated with the work is limited and the student has problems to apply theoretical studies to practical work. The reasoning in the rehearsal tasks is weak and the student has many gaps in his/her knowledge.
The student does not work independently and needs a lot of further guidance from the teacher. The student has not given a enough attention to the subject, and he/she does not have a clear overall understanding of the subject.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is familiar with the course subjects on a good level.
The student has taken part in all teaching sessions and rehearsals and the activity on the course has been good.
The studies have proceeded consistently. The student is able to understand the basic topics of the course and is able to apply the theoretical studies to practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal tasks is valid and the student understands the causes and effects of one's choices in the tasks.
The student works independently but there is still some need for further guidance from the teacher. The student has given enough attention for the subject and has an overall understanding of the subject.

The student masters the course subjects excellently.
The student has achieved the course objectives fully. The student has taken actively and constructively part in the teaching and the project.
The student masters the topics of the course and its prerequisites, and is able to apply theoretical studies to practical work. The reasoning in the rehearsal tasks is professional and the student can validate the causes and effects of his/her choices.
The student works independently and takes initiative. The student masters the overall subject in both theory and practice.
