Course unit code: SX00BO08

General information

Credits
10 ECTS

Objective

Students
- recognise the significance of histology to diagnostics of diseases and to treatment of patients
- identify general pathology phenomena in the human body and the most typical pathological changes specific to different organs
- explain the structure and functions of the human genome and regulation of these functions, as well as the links of these factors to disease mechanisms
- recognise different tissue types based on cell morphology
- perform the basic tests and their indications and understand the role of different working phases
- explain the significance of autopsies
- use pathology information systems and apply the principles of the quality system and occupational health and safety in clinical pathology

Content

Principles of work: current legislation and occupational safety, quality management, knowledge of information technology
General and organ pathology: normal cell morphology, normal tissue structure, cell damage, adaptation and death; tumours, special characteristics of diseases of different organs
Histology: sampling techniques, processing tissue samples, rapid section techniques, basic staining techniques and the most common diagnostic stains, immunohistochemistry, applications of molecular pathology
Autopsy activities: medical and forensic autopsies.
Molecular genetics: Structure of the genome; applications of genetic testing methods, legislation relating to diagnostics and the research area, quality and correct working methods; isolation, purification and amplification of nucleic acids and key methods of analysing genetic defects.
