Objective
- Student knows the canon and general conventions of music history writings.
- The student recognizes music and musical phenomena of Europe, Finland, Scandinavia from antiquity to 21st century music.
- Student can, as a musician and music educator, demonstrate in his/her writings, presentations and musical performance aspects of historical thinking and historical consciousness.
- Student is able to describe, analyze and argue his/her listening experiences and perceptions of music also regarding to musical/historical performances.
- - The student can search music and information from libraries, internet and different databases.
- Student can evaluate critically sources, and use them in an appropriate way in different professional tasks.
Content
Documentation of musical activities and music notation in Europe and in different eras; canonized ways to construe a historical narrative, such as style history or history as a timeline; music, music life and music’s conceptualization in Europe, Finland and Scandinavia from Ancient Greece to 21st century; historical thinking and historical consciousness in music. Collaborative sharing of students’ personal ways to construct and analyze music and musics’ history.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student recognizes music, music life and concepts unsatisfactorily or far between. Production of student’s own interpretations or analysis is lacking. Student can’t apply any traits of historical thinking in his/her writings, assignments or in his/her own musical performances
