General Course in the ArtsLaajuus (6 ECTS)

Objective

After completing the course, the student will be familiar with the overall development of different genres of the arts, their specific features and main means of expression, and the connection between genres selected for this course. The student will be able to recognize the different means of expression and genres of art, to analyse works of art and to place them in the framework of social and sociological developments of their own period. The student will be familiar with the literature of various genres of art and the manner in which the media discusses art.

- Relationship of the history of art with contemporary culture
- Art criticism and the art-related discussion in the media
- Basic terminology of esthetics

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Student is familiar with different genres of the arts, can recognize the different means of expression and genres of art and knows the manners of media when discussing the arts.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student knows different approaches to the arts, and can see the art forms in a wider context.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Utilising literature, the student can make high-level comparisons and analyses of the art-related discussion in the media, different genres of art and artefacts in their social and sociological context.
